October 2nd Poll!

Mononoke

Image

Mononoke follows a wandering, nameless character known only as the "Medicine Seller" (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai). The series is made up of individual chapters in which the medicine seller encounters, combats and subsequently destroys mononoke. The "mononoke" are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world.

The Medicine Seller always proceeds in the same manner, using his knowledge of the supernatural to fend off the mononoke until he can learn the spirit's shape (Katachi), truth (Makoto) and reasoning (Kotowari). Only then can he unsheathe his sword and exorcise the demon.

The Tatami Galaxy

Image

The story of The Tatami Galaxy follows an unnamed third year university student in Kyoto, Japan and what he views as his wasted time in a particular club (also called "circle") at his university. He meets Ozu, another student, whose encouragement sets him on a mission of dubious morality. He contemplates his affection for a second year engineering student, Akashi, and makes promises to her, usually of and within a romantic subtext. The culmination of his dubious missions often conflict with his interest in her in some way. The story is one of a number that draw on the author's experience in Kyoto University.

Tokyo ESP

Rinka Urushiba is a normal high school girl, until she encounters a penguin and shoals of glowing fish swimming through the sky. She looses consciousness only to awaken with the power to move through inanimate objects. At first she thought it was a hallucination if it were not for Kyotaro Azuma who witnessed the event and who, incidentally, has the ability to teleport. They decide to use their powers to combat people who might use their powers for evil.

Tegami Bachi

With his mother taken away from him and having lost everything, Lag Seeing is now a letter whose delivery has been assigned to Gauche Suede, a Letter Bee. Despite their troubling start, the two of them become friends, leading Lag to realize what his aim in life is: to deliver people's most important feelings in the form of letters, just as Gauche has done.

Yu Yu Hakusho

One day, 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi suddenly finds himself dead, having died pushing a child out of the way of oncoming traffic. Since he has such a bad personality, even the Spirit World was caught by surpise that he would sacrifice himself. Yusuke soon finds out he wasn't supposed to die and has a chance for resurrection and bringing his body back to life. After being resurrected, Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective, along with his comrades, and one adventure after another happens, whether it be an investigation or a fighting tournament.

Six High School girls have wacky adventures. Really, that's all the description I can give this show, although the phrase 'hilarious surrealism' could apply as well. We're talking flying cats, penguin butlers, sentient hair... and that's just one episode. Any comparison to other works just falls flat, the closest one can get is 'Peanuts on LSD' or 'Seinfeld in High School'. Where was I? Oh yes, the cat. Did I mention that this cat is EVERYWHERE!? And that he may or may not be the father of one of the main characters? Yep, its one of THOSE series, and it - is - AWESOME.

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!

Image

'Chuunibyou' is the period of hyperactive imagination among Japanese Junior High Children, and Yuuta Togashi used to have a BAD case of it. The former 'Dark Flame Master' wants nothing more than to forget his embarrassing past at his new High School. But this turns out to be a bit more difficult than he hoped when he meets Rikka Takanashi; a girl who's still living in her own little world and knows about Yuuta's past. Past and present collide, dream and reality blur as Yuuta discovers who he (and Rikka) truly is. Reality, be bent! Synapse, break! Vanishment, this world!

Barakamon

After punching a famous curator in the face for criticizing his work as "textbook and lifeless," Handa Seishuu is sent to Gotō Island to calm his nerves and find new inspiration for his calligraphy. Growing up in the city all his life, though, Handa must adapt to country life while meeting an assortment of quirky people during his tenure.
