Doujin Project!

Postby mindtailor » Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:49 pm

So this semester we want to try and put together an anthology-style MEK doujinshi. Anyone is welcome to submit work, regardless of how good you think your art is. You're welcome to submit as much or as little as you want, from a full story to just a page of doodles.

We'll be bringing manga art supplies to MEK occasionally during the 5-6 hour and extended breaks, and you're welcome to use those if you wish. We'll also be going to the 24-hour comic day event in Richardson on October 4th, and that can be used as time to work on your submissions as well.

First off, for a little bit of consistency we'd like the art to follow a set theme. Please post any suggestions y'all might have! I'll put together a list and we can pick or vote on one at the next meeting.

can we do kind of a sci-fi comedy hot potato thing?

we start off with one frame with a hook for a story
and several people draw what they think the the second frame would be and each of those frames would be labeled

say for instance
Sammy draws part 2 and labels it A2

Philip draws an alternate frame for part 2 and labels it B2

a week later
Amanda can come and make another scene 2 (then labeled C2)
or pick up where either Sammy or philip left off
if starting from philip's frame, amanda's new frame would be labeled BA3.
if starting from sammy's frame it would be AA3

(each time you pick up the story you add the next untaken letter to the right and + 1 to the frame value)

I think this would be really cool and give alot of freedom while allowing us to make coherent and creative stories

The future is now.

Since it'll be an anthology-style doujinshi, we could do something kind of along the lines of the .hack// expanded universe. Not genre wise, but in the sense that every .hack// story is separate from all of the others. They all take place in the same world, share the same lore, and have "universal constants" of sorts that link the individual stories together, but they all take place in different places, at different points in time, follow different characters, and have different essential plot points.
If we did this, it would allow a lot of creative freedom, while still making sure that everything is somewhat related. If people wanted they could use the same characters, or create mini-plot lines with their friends, or every one could kind of do their own thing, but nobody would be forced to build off of another's work. One person could write a comedy, while another could write a dark, action heavy story, and it would be okay for them to be bundled together because it all takes place in the same world.

We would have to decide on a world, or some lore, or "universal constants", and a genre, but I feel like this could work out very well.
